Since <\/span>it\u2019s<\/span> conception, the AWRCSASA have worked tirelessly to support victims of sexual assault and violence<\/span> and <\/span>raise a<\/span>wareness in community. <\/span>Through <\/span>collaborations <\/span>with <\/span>partners in<\/span> our broader community, such as St. Francis Xavier University and<\/span> Paqtnkek<\/span>\u00a0Mi\u2019kmaw Natio<\/span>n, <\/span>we\u2019ve<\/span> helped <\/span>develop <\/span>programs and <\/span>projects to respond to the needs of our community. <\/span>A major <\/span>component<\/span> of this work is\u00a0<\/span>sexual violence prevention and bystander intervention, which we encourage through the peer <\/span>facilitated<\/span> Waves of Change program<\/span> in Nova Scotian<\/span> post-secondary institutions<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The young people of our community are strong leaders and the future of this advocacy work. Through <\/span>Healthy Relationships for Youth and <\/span>many<\/span> other programs<\/span> and projects<\/span> over the years, we strive to empower young minds to <\/span>assert their agency and <\/span>become ch<\/span>ampions of <\/span>feminist advocacy. Poverty, and poverty reduction work, is a feminist issue. Women are disproportionately affected by poverty due to systemic inequalities in wages, caregiving responsibilities, and access to resources. From housing support to social assistance advocacy, the AWRCSASA has been supporting poverty reduction work in our community and planted the seeds for further community organizing. Women\u2019s fiscal and economic empowerment is tied to their liberation, making this poverty reduction work an important pillar of our feminist advocacy and support.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Supporting women and our broader community would not be possible without also supporting <\/span>the health of our community. <\/span>Building a healthier community and addressing health issues from a feminist perspective is impe<\/span>rative to give people the tools they need to be the change they want to see in the world. <\/span>Be it though community groups or our very own Lindsay\u2019s Health Centre<\/span> for Women<\/span>, we know that working towards a healthier community means working towar<\/span>ds <\/span>the social change that we strive for.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

The advocacy work that we do would not be where it is today without resilience, adaptability, and perseverance. Through funding cuts, community pushback, <\/span>and other hurdles that <\/span>we\u2019ve<\/span> jumped, <\/span>we\u2019ve<\/span> kept on going. <\/span>Good work<\/span> speaks for itself, and we <\/span>continue to do this <\/span>good work<\/span> while rolling with the punches. The AWRCSASA officially opened in 1983, but our roots were planted years earlier. In 1975, during International Women\u2019s Year, a group called Women in Transition began raising awareness of women\u2019s issues and building a network of support in Antigonish. This budding feminist movement emerged alongside the rapid modernization reshaping rural communities. From those early seeds grew a network of women committed to creating services and sparking change.
